assortment of wrapped holiday giftsThe holiday season brings joy, generosity and—unfortunately—a higher risk of scams, theft and fraud. Whether you’re shopping in person or browsing online for the perfect gift, stay vigilant and take steps to protect your purchases and your identity.

At The Dowd Agencies, we want to help you shop smarter and safer this season. As a trusted insurance partner to families and professionals throughout western Massachusetts and the New England region, we’re sharing the following essential tips to keep your holidays focused on celebration—not stress.

1. Shop Securely Online

Stick to reputable websites and double-check the URL before entering your credit card information. Look for “https” in the address bar and avoid public Wi-Fi when shopping online. Use strong, unique passwords and consider enabling two-factor authentication where available.

Check out these additional tips from the Mass Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.

2. Monitor Your Accounts

Check your bank and credit card statements regularly for unfamiliar charges. Set up transaction alerts to stay informed in real time. Early detection can stop fraud in its tracks.

3. Protect Your Deliveries

Package theft is on the rise during the holidays. If possible, have packages delivered to a secure location or use in-store pickup. Some shipping services also allow you to schedule delivery times or redirect packages. We offer more tips in this holiday home security blog.

4. Insure Shipped Gifts

When shipping gifts, ask the shipping service what it covers if the package is lost or damaged. Standard coverage may be up to $100 based on the shipper, so if the items you are shipping are worth significantly more, you may want to buy additional insurance to protect your purchases. Fees will range based on the declared value of the item.

5. Beware of Holiday Scams

Phishing emails and fake retailer sites become more common during the holidays. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t click on unfamiliar links or share personal information with unverified sources.

6. Review Your Insurance Coverage

Your homeowners or renters insurance may provide protection against theft or loss of gifts and packages—but limits and conditions apply. Now is a good time to review your policy and speak with us about additional protection, such as identity theft coverage or personal property endorsements.

Peace of mind starts with preparation. We’re here to support your safety and financial well-being through every season.
